How do “GLP-1s” work?
These medications – including Ozempic, Mounjaro, Zepbound, Saxenda, Rybelsus, Victoza, and Wegovy – work in a different way than other weight-loss medications. They mimic a hormone in the body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), lowering blood sugar after a meal. These medications also slow stomach emptying, which increases the feeling of fullness and signals the brain to stop eating.
While all these medications mimic GLP-1, they can work in slightly different ways, either by mimicking other hormones or lasting in the body different lengths of time. They all fall into the generic classifications of semaglutides, liraglutides, or tirzepatides.
